The Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock®
- Pawleys Island was the first ever hammock manufacturing company in the United States
- As it was in 1889, this hammock continues to be hand-woven in the same tradition
- Every United States President since Truman has received a Pawleys Island Hammock as a gift from South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond
- Made in the USA
History
Captain Joshua John Ward created The Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock in 1889. From the coastal lowlands of Pawleys Island in South Carolina, a tradition of handwoven rope hammocks has spread around the globe.
Captain Joshua, was a river boat Captain who barged rice and supplies between rice plantations. The grass filled mattress on his boat was uncomfortable and too hot in the summer, so he decided to make a cotton rope hammock for comfort and coolness. After trying several designs, Captain Joshua came up with a design that had no uncomfortable knots. He used a continuous latched weave with wooden spreader bars. That style and design is still in use today, representing a tradition and lifestyle typical of southern plantation days over a century ago.
Quality
Only the highest quality rope is used in each Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock. The rope is handwoven with an intricate macramé clew-end.
Hardware
The steel hardware is coated with weather resistant zinc plating. Each hammock includes everything you need for a tree or post installation including (2) tree hooks and chain/hook assemblies.
Spreader Bars
A signature of the Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock is the solid oak spreader bars that provide the ultimate in comfortable sway as well as great stability. Multiple coats of marine varnish protect the spreaders from the elements.
Tag
Once inspected, a metal logo tag is attached to each spreader bar to identify your hammock as an authentic Original Pawleys Island Hammock.

Hatteras Hammocks®
- Hatteras Hammocks® began over 30 years ago
- Symbol of quality and longevity
- Meticulously detailed workmanship
- Made in the USA
Hatteras Hammocks is a company that brings the East Coast atmosphere and the craftsmanship of the Carolina's workers across the United-States and the world. Mr. Walter R. Perkins, Jr., founder of Hatteras Hammocks, has received the Employer of the Year award from the N.C. Rehabilitation Association and the Pitt County Committee for Employing the Handicapped, a certificate of appreciation from the Coastal Plains Epilepsy Association, and a nomination for Employer of the Year by the National Mental Health Association.
Over its history, Hatteras Hammocks has been recognized for employing the handicapped. At one time, the North Carolina School for the Blind taught hammock weaving to students with supplies and the assistance of Hatteras Hammocks employees. Many students went on to open hammock companies of their own. Currently, Hatteras Hammocks employs one former student of the school, Lenwood Haddock. Mr. Haddock is one of the top weavers for the company averaging 80 hammocks a week!
When it comes to innovation, I think of Mr. Perkins ... and the twinkle in his eye that means he's got another idea ready to pop out. Mr. Walter Perkins Jr. is a typical Southern Gentleman, but with a giant twist of creativity. He created Hatteras Hammocks in 1971, and he's still in the office everyday, with more ideas than his team can keep up with.
I'd like to share a bit of the history of this company, so you can understand just what I am talking about when I say ... The Hatteras Difference.
Mr. Perkins started selling hammocks out of the trunk of his car. He would bring hammocks back from his business trips to the Pawleys Island area of South Carolina and sell them to friends. Well, his creative mind started working, and he started taking these hammocks apart. He wanted to see how they were made, and how he could make them better. His wife thought he was taking this hobby a bit too far.
But make those hammocks better he did. That's when he combined his talent for selling with his new and improved hammock. What started out as a hobby and service to friends has grown to be the absolute largest hammock manufacturer in the world. Not only the largest but the company that is associated with the highest quality standards in the industry. Mr. Perkins makes sure of that. He can still take a hammock apart and put it back together.
Today you will also find Mr. Perkins' son at the company. Walter Perkins III is the man in charge of making sure the company manufactures, warehouses, and ships everything his father dreams up. When you consider the number of products Mr. Perkins now manufactures, and the fact that they sell all over the world, young Walter has a logistics nightmare on his hands everyday when he walks in the door. Young Walter might be the only man I know that talks and thinks faster than his Dad. But the heart of this story is what this family has created.
The only quality hammocks you could buy in the 1970's were traditional rope hammocks made from cotton. That wasn't good enough for Mr. Perkins. He wanted something better. You see, no moss grows on this man or his son. If you blink, these two are already working on a new project.
Let me tell you about some of the innovative products that the Perkins have brought to the world of hammocks, swings, furniture and the great accessories to go with these products.
Handwoven Rope Hammocks
In addition to the traditional cotton rope hammocks, Hatteras Hammocks created a line of cotton soft DuraCord hammocks. This man made fiber is as soft as cotton ... and DuraCord will stand up to the elements! It's soft. It's durable. And it is available in a variety of colors.
Quilted Fabric Hammocks
Mr. Perkins created a soft quilted hammock bed made of two layers of a durable outdoor fabric. I should say a very soft woven fabric. Then they stuff it with poly-fiber fill to make it feel like a bed. It's a full bed style hammock versus the traditional rope hammocks, but it is also something more. This hammock comes in a variety of reversible fabric designs. If you are looking to add a bit of class to your hammock area, this is it.
Poolside Hammocks
Have you ever jumped in the hammock ... and it was soggy? Sure you have. If you have a busy pool or beach area, this hammock is just right. It is also a woven fabric hammock. This one is not as soft as the Quilted, but this one will dry out quickly. It is made of a single-ply, vinyl-coated, acrylic fabric weave. I know that sounds like a mouth full, but when Mr. Perkins comes up with an idea, he takes it to the max. This is a unique product for busy waterfront areas.
Hammock Stands
I can sum this up quickly. One of Mr. Perkins's stand designs won the International Casual Furniture Design of Excellence Awards. Another of his designs, is the most popular hammock stand in the world ... by maybe 10 to 1 ... if not more. Did he stop there. No way. You see if he stopped there, young Walter would have an easy job of just having to worry about two stands. Hatteras Hammocks manufactures six hammock and swing stands. That wasn't good enough either. They actually produce 12 stands when you consider the colors and textures.
Some might think that's enough. Not a chance. Mr. Perkins came up with a host of accessories and tables that attach to these stands and hammocks, as well as a line of pillows in different colors, fabrics and with special embroidery.
Cushioned Swings
In addition to the world's finest hammocks, Hatteras Hammocks came up with a truly magnificent line of single and double cushioned swings. These are great on your porch or hanging from a tree, but you can also use these on a patio or in your yard. You see, Mr. Perkins came up with a line of stands to make owning a swing, something for everyone.
Hatteras Outdoors Furniture
The tradition of excellence goes on and on. This is a line of first class outdoor or indoor casual furniture, combining the finest components with the tradition of handwoven hammocks. You'll want to visit this page, because this line is something special.
